Essential terms every beekeeper should know, from apiary basics to advanced sensor monitoring.

16 Terms

Apiary

A place where beehives are kept; also known as a bee yard.

BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy)

A wireless personal area network technology used by HiveSense to connect to hive sensors like BroodMinder without draining battery.

Brood

The eggs, larvae, and pupae of honeybees, found within the honeycomb.

Capped Brood

Pupae whose cells have been sealed with a wax cover by worker bees to allow them to transform into adult bees.

Health Score

A HiveSense metric that aggregates inspection data and sensor readings to provide a snapshot of a colony's overall vitality.

IPM (Integrated Pest Management)

A sustainable approach to managing pests (like Varroa mites) that combines biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools.

Langstroth Hive

The most common hive design in the world, featuring vertically stacked boxes and removable frames.

Nasonov Gland

A gland at the tip of the abdomen that bees use to release pheromones to guide other bees back to the hive.

Nectar Flow

A period when flowering plants are producing abundant nectar that bees can collect and turn into honey.

Offline-First

A software design philosophy where the application is fully functional without an internet connection, syncing data only when a connection becomes available.

Oxalic Acid (OAV)

A common organic treatment used to control Varroa mite populations, often applied via vaporization.

Queen Cell

A specialized, larger wax cell built by workers to raise a new queen bee.

Supersedure

The process by which a colony replaces an old or failing queen with a new one raised from within.

Swarm

The natural process of colony reproduction where the old queen and a large group of workers leave the hive to find a new home.

Varroa Mite

A parasitic mite that lives on and feeds on honeybees, often carrying viruses that can weaken or kill a colony.

Whisper AI

The on-device speech-to-text model used by HiveSense to transcribe hands-free inspection notes in the field.
