Switch from HiveTracks in an Afternoon
The honest migration guide: what transfers, what does not, and how to carry your history over. There is no one-click importer — but for a typical apiary, the whole move takes an afternoon.
Free for up to 15 hives. No account needed to start. Works offline.

The five steps
Export your HiveTracks records
On HiveTracks Pro, export your tables as CSV from the desktop web app — inspections, treatments, queens, and to-dos. Keep that file: it is your permanent archive, and their help centre says PDF export is not available yet. If you are on the free plan, copy the records that matter most (this season’s treatments and queen lineage) before you move on.
Install HiveSense
Download the app below. You can start in guest mode with no account and no credit card — the free tier covers up to 15 hives with no time limit, including offline mode, voice notes, queen tracking, and treatment schedules.
Recreate your apiary
Add your apiary and hives with the same names you used in HiveTracks, then set each queen’s marking colour and lineage. For a handful of hives this takes minutes; voice entry lets you dictate notes while your hands are full.
Bring over the history that matters
Start with this season: varroa counts and treatments, queen events (splits, supersedures, requeening), and any notes that change decisions. Older inspection logs can stay in your CSV archive — most beekeepers find the last season plus queen lineage covers 90% of what they actually look back at. If your records are well structured, email support@tryhivesense.com and we will help you bring them over.
Decide what stays in HiveTracks
You do not have to delete anything. HiveTracks runs a biodiversity platform alongside its beekeeping app — if you contribute to those datasets, keep it for that and run HiveSense as your field tool. Many switchers run both for a season before deciding.
Bring this first
Not all history is equal. When you are deciding what to carry over, prioritise in this order:
- This season’s varroa counts and treatments — this is what changes decisions at the hive.
- Queen lineage and events — splits, supersedures, and requeening, with dates.
- Notes that change management — temperament, honey production, winter survival.
Everything else — routine inspection logs from past seasons — can live in your CSV archive. You will almost never miss it.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an automatic importer?
No. We do not currently have a one-click importer from HiveTracks. Migration is manual — recreate the apiary, then carry over the history that matters — and we will help with structured records if you email support@tryhivesense.com. Many switchers treat the move as a chance to clean up years of messy records.
What exactly can I export from HiveTracks?
HiveTracks Pro exports your records as CSV from its desktop tables. According to their help centre, PDF export is not available yet. Keep your CSV file as your archive even after you move.
How long does migration take?
For a typical hobbyist apiary of a few hives, an afternoon. Recreating hives and queens takes minutes; the time goes into deciding which history to carry over. Bring this season’s treatments and queen lineage first — that is what changes decisions at the hive.
Do I have to cancel my HiveTracks account?
No. Nothing about switching requires closing HiveTracks. If you use its biodiversity features, keep it; if you only need a field log, HiveSense replaces it. There is no penalty for running both side by side.
Will I lose my historical data?
Not if you export first. Your HiveTracks CSV is a complete archive of everything you recorded. HiveSense keeps full history going forward — every inspection, treatment, and queen event, stored offline-first on your device.
Why switch at all?
The honest answer: switch if you want voice-to-text inspections and direct Bluetooth sensor reads (BroodMinder, BEEP), which HiveTracks does not publish. If you are happy typing notes and do not run sensors, HiveTracks remains a solid tool. The full breakdown is on our HiveTracks alternative page.
