Why inspection notes get thin
Every beekeeper knows the pattern. You mean to write it down, but you are holding a frame with a gloved hand and the smoker is going out. So you remember it for later, and later is the kitchen table, where “brood looked a bit off in the second box” is all that survives.
Some beekeepers solve this with a pocket voice recorder and transcribe at home. It works, but it is the same re-copying job with a different input. Voice notes in HiveSense skip the second step: what you say at the hive becomes the inspection record.
A gloves-on inspection, step by step

Before the season: download the voice model once
On Wi-Fi at home, HiveSense downloads the Whisper speech model (about 181 MB) to your phone. After that, transcription does not need a connection.

At the hive: open the inspection and tap record
Smoker in one hand, hive tool in the other. One tap with a knuckle starts the recording, and you work the frames while you talk.

Say what you see, in your own words
“Queen seen on frame five, good brood pattern, six frames of brood, honey is low, counted 8 varroa, bees are calm.” No commands to memorise and no fixed order.

Stop, and the phone transcribes it
The recording is kept on the phone first, so an interrupted capture is not lost. Whisper then turns it into text on the device. No signal is needed.

Check the filled-in fields and apply
HiveSense reads the transcript and fills in the inspection fields it recognises: queen seen, brood pattern, brood frames, honey stores, varroa count, temperament. It shows a confidence score and a warning when it is unsure, and the full transcript is kept as the inspection notes. You review, then apply.

The full transcript is also kept as the inspection notes, so nothing is thrown away because it did not fit a field. For a quick thought between hives (“order more frames”, “this one is going to need a super next week”), the capture button on a hive's screen saves a short voice, text or photo note to that hive without opening a full inspection.
What is under the hood, and what it does not do
The speech model is OpenAI's Whisper, in the standard “small” size, compressed to run on a phone through the open-source whisper.cpp project. We did not train our own model. What we add is the beekeeping side: a vocabulary list per language so words like varroa, Langstroth and Apivar come out spelled right, and a parser that turns a spoken sentence into inspection fields.
It is not live captioning. You record, stop, then it transcribes. It needs about 200 MB of free space for the model. And it is a speech tool, not a diagnosis. It writes down that you said “brood looks spotty”, and what that means for the colony is still your call.

Frequently asked questions
Do voice notes work in the beeyard with no signal?
Yes, once the speech model is on your phone. HiveSense downloads the Whisper model (about 181 MB) once over Wi-Fi. From then on, transcription runs on the phone itself, so it works in airplane mode or in an out-yard with no bars.
Do I have to use special commands?
No. Talk the way you would to a mentor standing next to you: "no queen seen but eggs present, brood looks spotty, counted 12 mites". HiveSense recognises common phrasings for each field, including spoken numbers. The same phrases also work as short form answers, like "queen seen yes" or "temperament calm".
How accurate is it?
Good on clear speech and honest when it is not. The model is biased toward beekeeping words like varroa, brood, Langstroth, oxalic acid and Apivar, so they are spelled correctly more often. After each capture you see a confidence score for the fields it filled, with a warning below 40%, and you review everything before it is applied. Wind across the microphone hurts any speech model, so turning your back to the wind helps.
Which languages are supported?
English, German, Spanish, French and Polish. Dictation follows your app language by default, and you can set it separately or choose auto-detect. The beekeeping vocabulary is applied when the language is set. In auto-detect mode it is left off, because a vocabulary list in the wrong language makes accuracy worse.
Is it real-time transcription?
No. You record, stop, and the phone then transcribes the clip. That keeps the work on the device and means a flaky connection never cuts you off mid-sentence.
