APiLOG made an early bet on voice and video AI for beekeepers, and the product reflects that — recording a frame walk-around and having an AI extract structured observations is novel and useful. If you have strong connectivity and want video as well as voice, APiLOG is a reasonable choice.
The architectural cost is cloud dependency. Voice and video transcription happen on a remote server, which means: it does not work in remote apiaries with poor signal, your audio and video are uploaded to a third-party service, and the experience depends on the cloud model and pricing staying stable.
HiveSense runs Whisper directly on your iPhone. The trade-off is a one-time ~142 MB model download and audio-only (no video). In return: voice transcription works in airplane mode, audio never leaves your phone, and there is no cloud bill in your future. We also read BLE hive sensors directly, which APiLOG does not.

APiLOG transcribes voice and extracts structured data using cloud models — fast on a strong connection, dependent on signal. HiveSense runs Whisper directly on your iPhone — audio never leaves the device, transcription works in airplane mode, and there is no cloud dependency. Both approaches have trade-offs: APiLOG can use newer cloud models more easily, HiveSense is more private and works in dead-signal yards.
Why does on-device voice matter?
Three reasons. One: it works without signal — most apiaries have poor cell service, and cloud voice apps stall there. Two: the audio never leaves your phone, which matters for sensitive notes about a queen breeder, a sick hive, or a buyer. Three: it stays free of usage caps or future API price changes from cloud providers.
Does APiLOG have features HiveSense does not?
Yes, fairly. APiLOG's video note feature is a real differentiator — recording a video walk-around of a frame and having the AI extract observations is novel and useful. HiveSense does not currently support video notes; we handle audio only. APiLOG also has Android support today, while HiveSense Android is still in development.

APiLOG supports data export. HiveSense does not currently have a one-click importer, but reach out to support@tryhivesense.com and we will help bring structured records and voice-note transcripts over.
