The ApiNote Alternative with On-Device Voice AI

Voice transcription that runs on your phone — not the cloud. Direct BLE integration with BroodMinder and BEEP sensors. Triple the free tier (15 hives vs 5). HiveSense is the offline-first alternative to ApiNote.

Free for up to 15 hives. Voice works offline. No credit card.

ApiNote is good. Here is where HiveSense goes further.

ApiNote has built a clean, well-designed app and the new AI Voice Assistant is a real differentiator for hands-free inspections. The cross-platform support (iOS + Android) is valuable too.

The architectural decision worth understanding is that ApiNote voice transcription is cloud-based. In a backyard with strong Wi-Fi this is invisible. In a 40-acre orchard with one bar of signal, the voice feature stops working — and your audio is briefly uploaded to a third-party service.

HiveSense runs the Whisper speech model directly on your iPhone. Once you download the model (about 142 MB, one time), every voice note transcribes locally with no network call and no upload. Combined with direct BLE sensor reads from BroodMinder, BEEP, Govee, and SensorPush, you get a workflow that does not depend on signal at all.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I switch from ApiNote?

ApiNote is a polished app with a strong free tier and the new Voice Assistant is a real upgrade. The reasons to add or switch to HiveSense are: voice transcription that runs entirely on your phone using Whisper (so it works in dead-signal yards and no audio leaves your device), direct Bluetooth integration with BroodMinder and BEEP sensors, and a true offline-first architecture. If you ever dictate inspections somewhere with no cell signal, the cloud voice model in ApiNote becomes unusable in those moments.

How is HiveSense voice different from ApiNote voice?

Both apps transcribe voice notes during inspections. The difference is where the work happens. ApiNote sends audio to a cloud service for transcription, which is faster on a strong connection but fails or stalls without one and means your audio briefly leaves your phone. HiveSense runs the Whisper model directly on the device — no upload, no network call, no cloud dependency. The trade-off is a one-time ~142 MB model download.

Is HiveSense really free?

Yes. The free tier covers up to 15 hives — three times ApiNote's free limit — with no time limit and no credit card. That includes offline mode, voice notes, BLE sensors, queen tracking, and treatment schedules.

Can I import my ApiNote data?

ApiNote supports CSV export from the PRO tier. HiveSense does not currently have a one-click importer, but reach out to support@tryhivesense.com and we will help you bring structured records over. The migration tends to surface old records worth cleaning up.

I am on Android. Does HiveSense work for me?

HiveSense is iOS-only today, with Android in active development. If you are Android-first and need an app immediately, ApiNote is a reasonable option. Sign up at tryhivesense.com to be notified when Android ships.

What about the BLE sensors?

HiveSense connects directly to BroodMinder (T2, TH, W), BEEP, Govee (H5100, H5075), SensorPush (HT.w, HTP.xw), and Inkbird (IBS-TH2, IBS-TH3). Readings pin to the hive record alongside inspections. ApiNote does not natively read BLE hive sensors — readings would need to come from a separate app.
