ApiNote is good. Here is where HiveSense goes further.
ApiNote has built a clean, well-designed app for iOS and Android, and its AI voice inspections are a real differentiator for hands-free work. It also goes deep on queens, with a registry, lineage and breeding series, and adds an AI advisor, field calculators and finances.
The difference worth understanding is connectivity. ApiNote says its AI voice assistant does not work offline: voice transcription and analysis require an internet connection. In a backyard with strong Wi-Fi this is invisible. In an out-yard with no signal, the voice assistant is not available.
HiveSense runs the Whisper speech model directly on your phone. Once you download the model (about 181 MB, one time), every voice note transcribes locally, with no network call. Combined with direct BLE sensor reads from BroodMinder, BEEP, and standard Bluetooth scales, you get a workflow that does not depend on signal at all.

Frequently asked questions
Why would I switch from ApiNote?
ApiNote is a polished app, and its AI voice inspections are a real upgrade: one recording can become an inspection, a feeding, a treatment and follow-up tasks. The reasons to add or switch to HiveSense are: voice transcription that runs entirely on your phone using Whisper (so it works in dead-signal yards and your audio never goes to a cloud speech model), direct Bluetooth integration with BroodMinder and BEEP sensors (ApiNote does not publish sensor support), and a bigger free tier. ApiNote's own FAQ says its AI voice assistant does not work offline, so if you dictate inspections somewhere with no cell signal, that feature is unavailable in those moments.
How is HiveSense voice different from ApiNote voice?
Both apps turn spoken inspections into records. The difference is connectivity. ApiNote's FAQ says voice transcription and analysis require an internet connection, and its published material does not say where the audio is processed. HiveSense runs the Whisper model directly on the device — transcription needs no upload, no network call and no cloud dependency. The trade-off is a one-time ~181 MB model download.
Is HiveSense really free?
Yes. The free tier covers up to 15 hives — three times ApiNote's free limit — with no time limit and no credit card. That includes offline mode, voice notes, queen tracking, and treatment schedules. BLE sensors are on Pro ($5.99/mo).
Can I import my ApiNote data?
ApiNote exports the datasets you choose as CSV files. HiveSense does not currently have a one-click importer, but reach out to support@tryhivesense.com and we will help you bring structured records over. The migration tends to surface old records worth cleaning up.
I am on Android. Does HiveSense work for me?
HiveSense is available on both iOS and Android, so Android-first beekeepers can use it natively today.
What about the BLE sensors?
HiveSense connects directly to BroodMinder (T2, TH, W), BEEP base sensors, and any hive scale that implements the standard Bluetooth Weight Scale profile. Readings pin to the hive record alongside inspections. ApiNote does not publish any Bluetooth hive-sensor support.
