The Beekeeping Diary Alternative for iOS Beekeepers
Offline-first. Native iOS app. Direct BLE sensor integration with BroodMinder and BEEP. On-device voice-to-text inspections. HiveSense is the modern alternative to Beekeeping Diary for iOS beekeepers who want sensors and voice in the same app.
Free for up to 15 hives. Works offline. No credit card.
Beekeeping Diary is good. Here is where HiveSense goes further.
Beekeeping Diary has earned its reputation among Android hobbyists. The free tier covers unlimited hives, the structured logging is clean, and the AI hive analysis based on your typed records is a genuinely novel feature for the price.
The trade-offs are platform and hardware. The native app is Android-only; iOS users are pushed to a web experience that does not work the same way in the field. There is no Bluetooth integration with hive sensors, no on-device voice transcription, and the interface is Polish-led with limited translation coverage.
HiveSense is the alternative for iOS beekeepers who want native app polish, real-time BLE sensor data alongside their notes, and hands-free voice-to-text — all working offline. If you keep your phone in your bee suit and a refractometer in your truck, this is the workflow.

Frequently asked questions
Why would I switch from Beekeeping Diary?
Beekeeping Diary is a solid free app, especially on Android, and the AI hive analysis based on logged data is a real differentiator. The reasons to add or switch to HiveSense are: native iOS support, direct Bluetooth integration with BroodMinder and BEEP sensors, on-device voice-to-text for hands-free inspections, and a 6-language interface. If your AI hive analysis is currently inferred from typed records, HiveSense layers real temperature and weight data on top of that picture.
Is HiveSense really free?
Yes. The free tier covers up to 15 hives with no time limit and no credit card — including offline mode, voice notes, BLE sensor integration, queen tracking, and treatment schedules. Paid tiers ($3.99 and $8.99/mo) add unlimited hives, team collaboration, and advanced analytics.
I am on Android. Does HiveSense work for me?
HiveSense is currently iOS-only with Android in active development. If you are Android-first and need an app right now, Beekeeping Diary is genuinely good and we recommend staying with it for the moment. Sign up at tryhivesense.com to be notified when the Android version launches.
Does AI hive analysis work without manual data entry?
Yes, when you pair BLE sensors. Beekeeping Diary infers colony status from your logged inspection data. HiveSense can do that too, but also reads brood-nest temperature, humidity, and hive weight directly from BroodMinder and BEEP devices — so anomaly detection runs on physical sensor data even between your inspections.
Can I import my Beekeeping Diary data?
Beekeeping Diary supports data export from its settings. HiveSense does not currently have a one-click importer, but reach out to support@tryhivesense.com and we will help you bring structured records over. Many switchers use the migration as a chance to clean up records.
How does the offline experience compare?
Both apps work offline, which is rare and good. The difference is architecture: HiveSense was offline-first from day one (every write goes to a local SQLite database first, sync is optional), and includes Local-Only Mode that disables all cloud traffic. If data privacy is a priority, that mode is worth knowing about.
