Your hive history is yours — for the long haul
Every beekeeper has the same quiet fear: years of inspections, queen lineages, and treatment records — gone because a phone broke, an app shut down, or a subscription lapsed. HiveSense is built so that never happens to you. Here is exactly how your records stay safe, portable, and readable for the long haul.
Free for up to 15 hives. Works offline. Your data stays yours.
The fear, answered directly
A lot of beekeeping software treats your records as something it keeps for you — on a server you do not control, in a format you cannot open, behind a login that can change or disappear. That is fine until the company pivots, the subscription model changes, or the lights go out. Then your history is stranded.
HiveSense is designed the opposite way. The primary copy of your data lives on your device. The cloud is a convenience layer, not the master record. And your data can leave in open formats whenever you want. The result is that your years of work do not hinge on us staying in business, on your signal, or on your subscription.
The rest of this page is the specifics — what we mean by “you own your data,” what actually happens if you stop paying, and the honest answer to “what if HiveSense goes away?”
Six promises about your data
You own your data
HiveSense is local-first. Your apiaries, hives, inspections, treatments, photos, and notes live in a database on your own device (SQLite, via WatermelonDB) — not only on someone else’s server. You are never locked out of your own history, because the primary copy is in your pocket.
Open export, anytime
Your records should be portable, not trapped. HiveSense is built so you can take your data out in open, plain formats you can open anywhere — a spreadsheet, an archive, another tool. The commitment is simple: no proprietary lock-in on the history you spent years building.
No hostage when a subscription ends
Canceling or downgrading changes which features are unlocked — not your access to records you already logged. Your data stays on your device, you keep read access to your existing history, and you can still export it. We never paywall the inspections you already wrote.
Offline-first by design
No signal required in the yard. Every record writes locally first; cloud sync is optional, not mandatory. Local-Only Mode keeps everything on-device with zero cloud traffic. The app does not depend on a server staying online to work.
Privacy & on-device AI
Local storage by default. Voice transcription runs entirely on your phone using an on-device Whisper model — your audio never leaves the device. We do not sell your data. Clear ownership: your hive records are yours.
A backup you control
Sync gives you one redundant copy; a periodic export to your own spreadsheet or cloud drive gives you a second, independent archive. With both, a lost phone is an inconvenience, never the end of your records.
A simple backup strategy that survives a lost phone
The strongest protection is redundancy — keeping your hive history in more than one place. You do not need anything technical. Two habits cover almost every scenario:
- 1.Keep sync on (if you want it). When you have signal, your records mirror to your private cloud account in the background. A new phone restores everything after you sign in. No manual step, no spinner while you are at the hive.
- 2.Export to a place you control, now and then. A periodic export of your records to a personal cloud drive or a spreadsheet gives you a second, independent archive that does not depend on any app at all. Do it at the end of a season and you have a parallel copy you can read forever.
With both in place, the worst-case math changes completely: a dropped, drowned, or stolen phone costs you a device — not a decade of beekeeping records.
“But what if HiveSense goes away?”
It is a fair question to ask any newer app, and we would rather answer it head-on than dodge it. The honest answer is that your records are insulated from us by design.
Because your data is stored locally and can be exported in open, portable formats, your history survives independent of the company. Your inspections do not live or die with our servers — they are on your device, and an exported copy opens in ordinary software that will outlast any single app. The offline-by-design architecture means the app keeps working on your phone whether or not a server is online.
On the “too new / unproven” worry: HiveSense is under active, regular development — new features and fixes ship on an ongoing cadence, and the roadmap is real. But the deeper reassurance is structural, not promotional: an offline-first, local-first, exportable app is one you do not have to trust blindly, because you are never dependent on the company to keep your own records. That is the point.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make sure my hive records are safe if I lose my phone?
Two parallel safeguards. First, if you have cloud sync turned on, your records are already mirrored to your private cloud account, so a new phone restores your full history after you sign in. Second — and this is the belt-and-suspenders move we recommend regardless — periodically export your records to a place you control (a spreadsheet, a personal cloud drive, a folder on your computer). With both in place, a cracked screen or a phone in a water tank never means lost data. Your years of inspections live in more than one place.
Can I export my data?
Yes — data portability is a core promise, not an afterthought. HiveSense is built so you can take your records out in open, portable formats rather than leaving them trapped in a proprietary database you cannot open. The point is simple: the history you build belongs to you, and you can carry it to a spreadsheet, an archive, or another tool whenever you want. If you need a specific export for your records and do not see it in the app yet, email [email protected] and we will help you get your data out.
What happens to my data if I stop paying?
You are never locked out of your own history. Your records live on your device in a local database, so they do not vanish when a subscription lapses — downgrading or canceling changes which features are unlocked (for example, the hive count cap or team collaboration), not your access to the inspections, treatments, and notes you already logged. You keep read access to your existing data, and you can still export it. We do not hold your beekeeping history hostage behind a paywall.
Will my records be readable 5–10 years from now?
That is exactly the worry this page exists to answer. Because your data lives locally and can be exported in open, plain formats, it does not depend on HiveSense being online — or even existing — to stay readable. An exported spreadsheet or plain data file opens in software that will still be around in a decade. That is the whole reason we favor open formats over a locked-in cloud-only store: a record you cannot open in ten years is not really yours.
Does HiveSense work without internet?
Yes, fully. HiveSense is offline-first by design: every inspection, voice note, photo, and BLE sensor reading writes to a local database on your phone first. You can run the entire app in airplane mode in a dead-signal yard. Cloud sync is an optional layer on top, and Local-Only Mode lets you keep everything on-device with zero cloud traffic if you prefer. The app never depends on a server staying online to let you record your hives.
Who can see my data?
By default, your hive data stays on your device. If you enable cloud sync, it is stored in your private account and is not shared unless you deliberately invite a teammate to an apiary. Voice transcription runs entirely on-device using an on-phone Whisper model, so your audio never leaves the phone. We do not sell your data, and we do not mine your hive records to sell to third parties. Local-Only Mode means no cloud traffic at all.
