HiveBook is one of the few beekeeping apps with a genuine offline-first stance: records stay on the device, iCloud backup is optional, and its AI features run on-device. Its free tier covers 5 hives and 1 apiary, with Pro ($4.99/mo) and Premium ($9.99/mo) subscriptions above that. If you keep bees on Apple devices and want finance, tax and compliance records beside your hive records, HiveBook is a fair choice.
The scope differences worth knowing: HiveBook runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, with no Google Play listing. It does not list Bluetooth sensor integration or voice-to-text. Team collaboration is on its Premium plan. Its App Store listing is English-only.

HiveBook and HiveSense share the offline-first philosophy, and that is a meaningful overlap — both store records locally and do not depend on cell signal. The differences are in scope. HiveSense adds direct BLE sensor integration (BroodMinder, BEEP, and standard Bluetooth weight scales), on-device voice-to-text via Whisper, a native Android app, and a 5-language interface; HiveBook does not list Bluetooth sensors or voice notes, and it runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac. HiveBook adds finance, tax and compliance tools and on-device AI on its paid plans. Both offer team collaboration on a paid plan. Why would I switch from HiveBook?
Two concrete reasons. One: you own or are considering BroodMinder, BEEP, or other BLE hive sensors and want their readings on the same timeline as inspections. Two: you want to dictate inspections hands-free while you work. HiveBook does not list either feature. Team access is not a reason on its own: HiveBook offers team collaboration on its Premium plan ($9.99/mo), and HiveSense offers team seats on its Pro plan.
Is HiveSense really free?
Yes. The free tier covers up to 15 hives with no time limit and no credit card — including offline mode, voice notes, queen tracking, and treatment schedules. HiveBook's free tier covers 5 hives and 1 apiary, and its Pro plan ($4.99/mo) unlocks unlimited hives. On HiveSense, unlimited hives are Pro, $5.99/mo, which also adds BLE sensors and team collaboration.
Can I import my HiveBook data?
HiveBook exports records as CSV files on its Pro and Premium plans, covering inspections, treatments, harvests, expenses and varroa counts. HiveSense does not currently have a one-click importer, but reach out to support@tryhivesense.com and we will help bring structured records over.
Is the offline experience genuinely the same?
Architecturally, yes — both store everything locally and treat cloud sync as optional (HiveBook uses optional iCloud backup). Practically, HiveSense transcribes voice on-device using Whisper, so dictating an inspection works in airplane mode. HiveBook does not list a voice-notes feature.
What about Android?
