The HiveBook Alternative with Sensors and Voice

Both apps are offline-first — that is the meaningful overlap. HiveSense adds direct BLE integration with BroodMinder and BEEP, on-device voice transcription via Whisper, and team collaboration. Free for iOS.

Free for up to 15 hives. Works offline. No credit card.

HiveBook is good. Same philosophy — different scope.

HiveBook is one of the few beekeeping apps with a genuine offline-first stance, and the unlimited-free-hives tier is generous. If you are a solo beekeeper on iOS who wants a clean journaling experience without subscriptions, HiveBook is a fair choice.

The scope differences worth knowing: HiveBook is iOS-only with no Bluetooth sensor integration and no voice-to-text. It is built for a single user, so a partner or apprentice cannot share access. The interface is English-only.

HiveSense covers the same offline-first ground and adds the hardware and team layers: BLE reads from BroodMinder, BEEP, Govee, SensorPush, and Inkbird; Whisper voice transcription that works in airplane mode; team seats on the Pro plan; an upcoming Android client; and 6 localized languages. The trade-off is that the free tier caps at 15 hives rather than unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

You are both offline-first. What is the difference?

HiveBook and HiveSense share the offline-first philosophy, and that is a meaningful overlap — both store records locally and do not depend on cell signal. The differences are in scope. HiveSense adds direct BLE sensor integration (BroodMinder, BEEP, Govee, SensorPush, Inkbird), on-device voice-to-text via Whisper, team collaboration on the Pro plan, an upcoming Android version, and a 6-language interface. If you want a solo, iOS-only journal with unlimited free hives, HiveBook is excellent. If you want sensors and voice in the same offline experience, HiveSense is the upgrade path.

Why would I switch from HiveBook?

Three concrete reasons. One: you own or are considering BroodMinder, BEEP, or other BLE hive sensors and want their readings on the same timeline as inspections. Two: you want to dictate inspections hands-free while you work. Three: you have a partner, family member, or team that needs shared access to the same apiary records — HiveBook is single-user, HiveSense supports team seats on the Pro plan.

Is HiveSense really free?

Yes. The free tier covers up to 15 hives with no time limit and no credit card — including offline mode, voice notes, BLE sensors, queen tracking, and treatment schedules. HiveBook covers unlimited hives on the free tier; HiveSense charges $3.99/mo (Hobbyist) for that and adds team collaboration on $8.99/mo Pro.

Can I import my HiveBook data?

HiveBook supports data export. HiveSense does not currently have a one-click importer, but reach out to support@tryhivesense.com and we will help bring structured records over. The migration tends to be straightforward since both apps use similar inspection schemas.

Is the offline experience genuinely the same?

Architecturally, yes — both store everything locally and treat cloud sync as optional. Practically, HiveSense adds one capability HiveBook does not: voice transcription runs on-device using Whisper, so dictating an inspection works in airplane mode. HiveBook does not have voice notes today.

What about Android?

HiveBook is iOS and iPad only. HiveSense is iOS-only today with native Android in active development. If you are on Android, neither app is currently your best option — but HiveSense will be once the Android version ships. Sign up at tryhivesense.com to be notified.
