The HiveCompanion Alternative with Voice Notes and BLE Sensors
HiveCompanion is a genuinely no-nonsense offline logbook: no account, no subscription, one $5.99 purchase. HiveSense is also offline-first, and adds on-device voice notes, direct BroodMinder/BEEP BLE sensor reads, and optional cloud backup — none of which HiveCompanion publishes.
Free for up to 15 hives. Voice works offline. BLE sensors on Pro, $5.99/mo.
HiveCompanion is good. Here is the honest trade.
HiveCompanion’s pitch is refreshingly plain: “No cloud, no account, no subscription.” It stores everything on your device, never asks you to sign in, ships no analytics of any kind, and charges a single $5.99 for unlimited hives — no recurring fee, ever. For a beekeeper who wants a private offline logbook and nothing else, that is a genuinely hard offer to beat, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
The trade is what that simplicity leaves out. HiveCompanion does not publish a voice-notes feature, so there is no hands-free way to log an inspection with gloves on. It does not publish support for BroodMinder, BEEP, or any Bluetooth hive sensor, so weight and temperature readings are not available for sensors you have already bought. And because it never offers cloud sync at all, a lost or replaced phone means your records are gone unless you have been exporting PDFs yourself.
HiveSense asks for an account up front — real friction HiveCompanion does not have — in exchange for voice notes transcribed on-device with Whisper, direct BLE sensor reads, and optional cloud backup across devices if you want it. If you do not want any of that, HiveCompanion’s model is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions
Why would I choose HiveSense over HiveCompanion?
HiveCompanion is a clean, honestly-built logbook with a real edge: zero account, ever, and a single $5.99 purchase instead of a subscription. Choose HiveSense if you want voice notes transcribed on your phone (HiveCompanion does not publish any voice feature), direct BroodMinder/BEEP Bluetooth sensor reads (also not published by HiveCompanion), optional cloud backup across devices, or team collaboration with other beekeepers on an apiary. If none of that matters to you and you just want an offline logbook you buy once and never think about again, HiveCompanion is a legitimate pick.
Does HiveSense really require an account?
Yes — unlike HiveCompanion, HiveSense asks you to sign in (email or a social sign-in) before you can use it, even on the free, local-only tier. That account is what makes optional cloud sync, multi-device backup, and team collaboration possible later without re-entering your data. If you never want your records to leave your device, HiveSense’s Local-Only Mode keeps cloud sync off, but the initial sign-in itself is not optional the way it is with HiveCompanion.
Which is cheaper, HiveSense or HiveCompanion?
It depends on what you need. HiveSense is free for up to 15 hives with no time limit, which is more hives than HiveCompanion’s free tier (10) and costs nothing if you stay under that cap. But if you need more hives, or want export, HiveCompanion’s $5.99 one-time Pro purchase is cheaper over time than any subscription, including HiveSense Pro at $5.99/mo or $59.99/yr. A beekeeper who only needs an offline logbook with unlimited hives and export, and nothing else in this table, will pay less with HiveCompanion.
Is HiveSense free to try?
Yes. The free tier covers up to 15 hives with no time limit and no credit card, including offline mode and on-device voice notes. BLE sensors, PDF/Excel export, and team collaboration are paid features.
Can I import my HiveCompanion records into HiveSense?
HiveCompanion exports to PDF and Excel. HiveSense does not have a one-click importer for those files today, but email support@tryhivesense.com and we will help you bring structured records over.
Does HiveSense track or sell my data?
We do not sell hive data or mine it for third parties. HiveSense does ship anonymous usage analytics on by default (a toggle in Settings turns it off), which is a real difference from HiveCompanion, which ships no analytics code at all. Voice transcription runs on-device either way — your audio is never sent to a speech-recognition service.
