Honey Moisture Calculator
Enter your refractometer reading — Brix or direct moisture %. The calculator returns fermentation risk, storage classification, and whether your honey meets Grade A (≤18.6%) standards. Free, no signup, all math in your browser.
Honey refractometers typically read 12–30%. Sugar (Brix) refractometers typically read 0–90 °Bx and require conversion.
Take the reading at 20°C (68°F). If your refractometer has ATC (automatic temperature compensation), it adjusts automatically.
Meets US Grade A (≤18.6%) and is within the safe range for retail sale and indefinite storage. Keep in sealed containers away from humidity to prevent moisture pickup.

Moisture standards by region
- US Grade A: ≤18.6% moisture (USDA)
- EU honey directive: ≤20% (most honeys); ≤23% (heather, baker's)
- Codex Alimentarius: ≤20%
- Fermentation threshold (yeast active): ~18.0–19.0% depending on yeast count
- Optimal long-term storage: ≤17.0%
Honey is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air. Keep bottled honey in sealed containers below 60% relative humidity to prevent moisture creep above safe thresholds.
